Cheng Meng Chu (陳孟竺) has certainly been familiar to swinging in the final group spotlights, but this time she was finally able to get the last laugh to leave the Chang Gung Golf Club. Cheng’s 2-over 74 final round on Thursday was just enough for her to have the victory over Yu Pei-Lin (余珮琳) by one shot at the 2014 Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Spring).
The 23-year-old Taiwanese had some problems closing out when she bogeyed the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth in a row. It had to be a par or better on her final hole to secure the title, as Yu had drained a beautiful birdie putt to finish the tournament and left her fate in Cheng’s hand with a mere one-stroke difference.
However, Cheng maintained her calmness, not letting her chance slip this time. She finished the tournament at an even 144. “It was great that I finally won, but I made things way too difficult than it should’ve been,” said Cheng. “There is still a lot to work on on the mental side, that you have to learn to keep the composure when you know you’re getting close.”
Cheng had three birdies but also five bogeys while the winds gusting on the Chang Gung Golf Club, which would also be the venue for the autumn edition of the Chung Cheng Heritage Tour in November, and the 54-hole Chung Cheng Ladies Open in August. “I hope it makes a good start and I can continue with the good performances to get more wins,” said Cheng, who was awarded a NT$71,000 winner cheque.
Playing conditions were rough throughout the day and only one player, Huang Hsien-Wen (黃賢雯), finished the day at under-par, whose 1-under 71 put her on the third place among all 35 players in the Group Professionals at a final score of 147.
First-round leader Chang Hsuan-Ping’s (張瑄屏) missing precision under the wind had cost her dearly. She shot a disappointing 8-over 80 with double-bogeys on Hole 3 and 11 to drop in a tie for seventh at 5-over 149 with Shih Huei-Ju (石惠如) and Liang Yi-Lin (梁宜羚). “I wasn’t feeling too good when I was warming up earlier, and unfortunately I couldn’t raise my level,” said Chang, who was the winner of last year’s TLPGA Heritage Tour (TLPGA傳承賽).
The second best showing actually came in Group Amateurs of Women’s 16-25. Chen Min-Jou (陳敏柔) scored three birdies and three bogeys each for another even-par round, taking the victory in the group at 144.
Defending champion Babe Liu’s (劉依貞) steadiness paved her way back to the front of the leaderboard. She eventually finished in a tie for fourth along with Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧) and Chen I-Wen (陳依妏) at 148.
The Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Spring) is a 36-hole pro-junior event. It is also one of the four pro-junior events on the 2014 TLPGA calendar. The Heritage Series Tour opened up a chance for the youngsters to play along with the pros for the “heritage” and the passing of experiences, for which the series was named. |
