2014 Taiwan LPGA Tour | Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Spring) 9–10 Apr First Round Recap
Date:2014-04-09

Chang Hsuan-Ping (張瑄屏) of Taiwan captured five birdies against two bogeys to shot a 3-under 69 in the opening round of the Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Spring), which would give her a one-shot niche into Thursday’s final second round.

The Chang Gung Golf Club is the backdrop of this week’s 36-hole pro-junior event. The Heritage Series Tour opened up a chance for the youngsters to play along with the pros for the passing of “heritage” and experiences, for which the series was named. For this year, 35 TLPGA players will be vying for a total purse of NT$600,000, as 66 amateurs and junior talents compete on the same course.

Chang, the fourth-year Tour member, had already two TLPGA titles in hands, but the latest came in a year ago at the 2013 TLPGA Heritage Tour.

After a five-minute sudden rain poured down in the beginning of the opening round, Chang’s cold feeling with a bogey on the second didn’t last too long as she bounced back with back-to-back birdies on Hole 4 and 5 to take the lead.

Chang went on to score three more birdies on eleventh, thirteenth, and seventeenth, before bogeying the final hole, decreasing her lead to just one shot over compatriot Cheng Meng Chu (陳孟竺).

Cheng, who had been forced to battle injuries since the end of last season, was seeking some match practice in this week’s event, but was nicely surprised with her high-percentage five-birdie performance with just three bogeys, and taking aim at the championship tomorrow.

There sits a crowded four-way tie for third at 1-under 71 of Shih Huei-Ju (石惠如), Liang Yi-Lin (梁宜羚), Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧), and Yvonne Weng (翁子琁), all with two shots off the lead. Defending champion Babe Liu (劉依貞) struggled with a slow start to finish in a tie for tenth at 2-over 74.

Besides Group Professionals, Group Amateurs of Men’s/Women’s 16-25, Boys’/Girls’ 12-16, and Juniors’ 8-12 were all underway.

The Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Spring) is one of the four pro-junior events on the 2014 TLPGA calendar. The TLPGA Heritage Tour will begin on Jun 12th, and then it is TLPGA & Tsai Hsing Heritage Tour to start on October 2nd. Finally, there will be the autumn edition of the Chung Cheng Heritage Tour in November. Fans will also be entertained in August with the grand Chung Cheng Ladies Open, which is also supported by the Chung Cheng Golf Development Foundation and will take place at this Chang Gung Golf Club.
