LPGA Tour campaigner Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) grabbed her second Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open today at the Taifong Golf & Country Club. The 2021 winner came from one-shot down in the final round today, carding a bogey-free 69 to take a two-shot victory over TLPGA Tour rookie Wu Chun-Wei (吳純葳) and 36-hole co-leader Lee Hsin (李欣).
Hsu became the first player to ever win the tournament twice in its eight-year history. The win is worth a record-high NT$1.5 million.
Hsu pushed past her tendency to have a slow start in the previous rounds, where she dropped a total of five shots during no.1 to no.4 holes on the first two days. On the final Friday, Hsu safely made four straight pars and earned her first birdie on the par-5 fifth to go on 2-under par.
Off in the second to last group, Hsu remained blemish-free through to the ninth hole, when she pleasantly found herself already at the top of the leaderboard with a two-stoke advantage as Lee Hsin, Wu Chun-Wei, and Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) in the final group all struggled to keep up their pace.
Lee Hsin, who became the outright leader after making a birdie on the first hole, dropped three shots in two holes with a bogey on the seventh and a double-bogey on the eighth to slip down from the top. “The pins were tucked today. It was a real challenge. I found it tough to get close to the pin,” Lee Hsin said.
Lee Hsin kept trying to put pressure the leader with aggressive play and went birdie-bogey-birdie on no.11 to 13 to get herself up to one-shot behind. But Hsu, who won the event on Tong Hwa Golf Course in 2021, stood up to the occasion, using a well-crafted 9-iron approach to send the ball from the right rough to the edge of the 16th green. And then she holed out the birdie from that position with her putter to regain a two-shot cushion.
Hsu kept up the momentum, carrying her second shot on the 17th fairway next to the green-side bunker to earn a great vision to the flag. She then drilled her pitching wedge beautifully to just two feet and converted the birdie.
Lee Hsin also made a birdie on the par-5 17th, her third birdie on the back nine, to give herself a final chance on the 18th. However, it was a tough ask to make an eagle to force the play-off. Lee Hsin wrapped it up with a par to card a final-round 72, and finished as the runner-up alongside Wu Chun-Wei on 2-under 214. She needed 30 putts in the final round.
Wu Chun-Wei is only playing her second tournament as a TLPGA Tour pro, and she now has recorded two top-6 finishes (She finished in T6 last week at the Taya Group Ladies Open). Going out with a 2-over 38, Wu bounced back to close the round in red number with three inward birdies.
19-year-old Wu completed a surprise wire-to-wire victory this February in the 2024 Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific in Thailand, which earned her tickets into three of the five LPGA Tour majors this year. “This has been an incredible year for me. A lot of firsts. Playing in an LPGA Tour major event was a dream-come-true experience, and a humbling one,” Wu said. “It’s been an awesome two weeks on the TLPGA Tour as well. I can’t wait to see what the new season brings.”
Hsu finally break the title drought. In fact, her last victory on the professional tour came here at the 2021 Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open. The 30-year-old just finished her 10th season on the LPGA Tour; her best finish this year has been a T6 at the Malaysia Championship in October.
“The past three seasons have been a little disappointing, but I never stopped improving and trying to be my best self. I’m glad that in front of one of my greatest sponsor Taiwan Mobile, I got to win another title,” Hsu said. She will start her 2025 LPGA Tour season in February at the Founders Cup.
2020 champion Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) made four three-putts on Friday. She stepped down from the lead after dropping three shots on no.5 and no.6 and never was able to return into contention. She finished with a 4-over 76 to conclude in a tie for eighth on 3-over 219, which still helped her secure the title as the official 2024 TLPGA Tour Money Winner.
15-year-old Lin Jie-En (林潔恩) was declared the low amateur after a final-round 70. The big-hitting junior high school student wrapped it up also on 3-over 219. |
