The season-end Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open will tee up tomorrow with a record high NT$8 million total prize (60% increase from last year). The event will be held at the Taifong Golf & Country Club in Changhua for the second year in a row.
The 102-player international field sees five former champions return, including defending champion Juliana Hung (洪玉霖), Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇凌), Lee Min (李旻), Lin Tzu-Chi (林子麒), and Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸).
Hung, who is called “Taifong Killer” by the Taiwanese media, has pocketed one victory on this specific venue in each of the past three years, including winning last year’s Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open by four shots at 11-under 205. With this win, Hung joined the Taiwan Mobile roster along with fellow U.S. Tour campaigners Hsu Wei-Ling and Lee Min.
Hung made her Epson Tour debut in March, and took her first victory in just her fourth outing at the IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, recording an unprecedented 21-under 195 to triumph by nine shots. She has made 11 cuts in 18 starts on the LPGA’s developmental circuit in her rookie season this year.
Hung will be looking to get back to winning ways here at Taifong, for her eighth career TLPGA Tour victory. She will also be attempting to be the first player to defend the title. No player has ever won this tournament twice over its seven-year history.
Hsu Wei-Ling, the 2021 Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open champion, made three top-10s on the LPGA Tour this season plus a T8 finish at the Paris Olympics, which is the best finish ever by a Taiwanese woman at the Olympic golf event.
“It is not the best season, result-wise, but I’m really happy with how I fare with the challenges and pressure. There were ups and downs, of course, but I always told myself to keep up a happy, positive mind, and to seek every chance to learn and improve,” said Hsu. Her best finish on the 2024 LPGA Tour has been a T6 at the Malaysia Maybank Championship in October, where she scored her first career ace in the final round and wrapped it up with a 72-hole total of 15-under 273.
2018 champ Lee Min has made seven starts on the LPGA Tour and four on the Epson Tour. A T7 at the Island Resort Championship presented by Delta County Chamber has been the highlight of her season, where her Mom carried the bags for her.
Chien Pei-Yun won the 2020 Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open, which was the first of her four top-tier TLPGA Tour victories, including the Hitachi Ladies Classic title at the start of the year. The three-time Epson Tour (Symetra Tour) winner recorded two top-10 finishes in the 2024 LPGA Tour season, and had secured an LPGA Tour card for 2025.
Thailand’s P.K. Kongkraphan has been the standout performer on the TLPGA Tour over the last two seasons, sweeping an impressive total of seven victories and four in 2024. She would safely be one of the top picks for this week’s eventual winner.
20-year-old Chang Ching-Ling (張靖翎), this year’s Friends of TLPGA Open and YTS & Suncity Heritage Tour winner, is currently leading the 2024 TLPGA Tour Money List. Chien Pei-Yun sits closely in the second place. No.4 Wang Li-Ning (王莉甯) and no.5 Chen Hsuan (陳萱) are also in the hunt for the official Money Winner of 2024 title, which will be decided after the final round on Friday.
There will be 38 international players teeing up on Wednesday’s first round, featuring 28 from Thailand, 9 from Japan, and 1 representing Malaysia. A cut will be made after 36-holes to only the top-50 and ties. Winner on Friday will take away a historic NT$1.5 million cash prize. |
