LPGA Tour titlist Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) has never been quite a successful hole-in-one maker. She finally scored her first career ace in the final round of the LPGA Tour’s Malaysia Maybank Championship in October, where the 30-year-old finished in a tie for sixth—her best finish in this LPGA Tour season.
“It’s my first hole-in-one in my 12-year career. It was an amazing feeling. I almost thought I would never make one,” Hsu said.
If there would be another chance for her to grab, Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open is the place to be.
The 2018 Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open at the Tong Hwa Golf and Country Club has created one of the craziest feats in golf history. During the tournament, four hole-in-ones were recorded on the same 16th hole, with Chang Ya-Chi (張亞琦) found the first ace in the first round and Hanna Chen (陳子涵), Lynn Chou (邱齡緹), and Lee Min (李旻) making the second, third, and fourth one all on the following day.
Five years later in the 2023 event, in front of a new backdrop at the Taifong Golf & Country Club, another two aces were scored. Chen Szu-Han (陳思涵) holed out from 145 yards on the 12th hole in the second round, and in just two hours, eventual champion Juliana Hung (洪玉霖) repeated the efforts.
“Looking at the layout, I feel we could have a better shot on No.2. It is shorter and the approach to the green goes downhill,” Hsu looked toward her friend Lee Min and said. “I hope I can join her to be written into the tournament history (by making a hole-in-one)!”
Defending champion Juliana Hung is trying to make another history as the first player to defend the title in the 8-year-old event. She snatched the 2023 victory on a 54-hole total of 11-under 205. In fact, she has conquered the field thrice at the Taifong Golf & Country Club, which was created by Japanese designer Hiroshi Watanabe.
The difficulty of this week’s setting has increased, though, with the green speed measured at 10.5. “The greens are sometimes really hard to read,” said Yuna Arakawa, who finished in T7 last year.
“I don’t feel a problem. Actually, I think I prefer the green to play faster,” Hung said. “I kind of thrive on a mountain course. My accuracy is a good weapon to help me get an advantage here.”
Known for her distance and consistency, P.K. Kongkraphan would probably not have as much edge around this Taifong layout, but the eight-time TLPGA Tour winner is never one to be counted out.
The Thai has achieved seven of her eight victories in less than two years; she has pocketed four wins alone in 2024. She lost to Hung by four shots in the 2023 Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open, finishing as the solo runner-up on 7-under par 209.
“It’s been a wonderful two years. The people and players are very friendly. I really enjoy my time on the TLPGA Tour. I hope I can play as long as I can here,” said Kongkraphan. “It almost feels like my second home. The food is so nice, too. I think I gained about 10 kilos compared to when I first moved to Taiwan.” |
