A new record has been set as the TLPGA Tour arrives at the Sunrise Golf Club this week. The Wistron Ladies Open is providing the biggest prize money in event history. 102 players gathering from Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines will compete for an $800,000 purse through four rounds of battle. This is also the highest-paying tournament in the 2023 TLPGA Tour season.
Wistron, a Fortune’s top-500 company and one of the global leaders in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) field, has been an important partner with the TLPGA since 2006 and sponsoring the Wistron Ladies Open since 2020. This year, Wistron announced yet another prize money increase with a total prize pool of $800,000 (about 300% increase from 2020 and 60% increase from 2022).
A lot will be at stake when the Wistron Ladies Open action kicks off on Thursday, as huge world ranking points will also be on offer in the rich event. The best women standing on Sunday is going to take away a record $160,000 cash prize. Wistron added that the amount will be doubled if a local player wins this year’s tournament, which attracts a star-studded player line-up including LPGA champions Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) and Yani Tseng (曾雅妮).
Tseng, who won the 2011 LPGA Taiwan Championship on this exact same place, returns to action after a second hip surgery.
Sunday’s champion, along with the three previous winners, will have their names engraved on a newly-designed, symbolic trophy. The inspiration is linked to the famous British Open’s Claret Jug, which bears the name of the winner every year.
An anti-climatic ending of last year’s edition saw the 72-hole event shortened to 36-hole due to bad weather, making 36-hole leader Chang Ya-Chun (張雅淳) the third winner of the Wistron Ladies Open. She and 2020 champion Shih Cheng-Hsuan (石澄璇) look forward to appearing twice on the symbolic trophy after this weekend.
“To be honest, I embrace any outcome, good or bad, I’m still young. I believe they are all great learning experience,” said Chang, who currently stands atop the 2023 TLPGA Tour’s official money leaderboard.
Standing in the way of local players who look to grab the lucrative special prize are some of Thailand’s best. LPGA Tour members Jaravee Boonchant and Wichanee Meechai and this year’s TLPGA Tour winners P.K. Kongkraphan, Mim Sangkapong, and Chonlada Chayanun are among the title favorites. Filipino golfer Bianca Pagdanganan, who is ranked as high as no.3 in driving distance on the LPGA Tour, has every skill to bag home a win as well.
Set at 6,413 yards long for the week, the challenging Sunrise layout has tested some of the best players in the world. It became the venue of many high-profile international events such as the LPGA Taiwan Championship and the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade.
This week, four Hole-in-One prizes will be on offer on No.2, 4, 11, and 16. An elimination looms after the second round on Friday. |
