Thailand’s Chonlada Chayanun captured her second TLPGA Tour victory today at the NT$3 million KENDA Tires TLPGA Open, and bagged away a NT$540,000 champion prize.
The 30-year-old Thai is on her sixth season on the TLPGA Tour. She is also a four-time winner on her home Tour.
Starting Friday’s final-round as the co-leader with Shih Cheng-Hsuan (石澄璇) on 6-under, Chayanun improved her score to a winning total of 7-under 209 with four birdies and three bogeys on her score card.
Chayanun gave a shot away on the very first hole of the Taifong Golf Club; however, she righted the ship quickly and pocketed birdies and no.3 and no.8 to keep herself in the lead.
While Shih fading away with a double-bogey and a bogey early in the round, Hanna Chen (陳子涵) stepped in to keep the local hopes alive. She birdied no.5 and no.7 to make the turn in a tie with Chayanun, but bogeys on the 10th and 12th significantly dented her chances of victory.
Despite Chayanun admittedly being nervous and dropping shots on the 10th and 16th, she was able to pull off birdies on the 13th and, crucially, the par-5 17th to convert the victory.
This victory makes Chayanun the second winner from Thailand in the TLPGA tournament’s 10-year history, after Saranporn Langkulgasettrin got the last laugh in the 2017 edition.
In fact, Huang Ching (黃靖) was just one shot off the lead on the 18th fairway, where she attempted to attack the pin from 92 yards and then force a play-off with a good putt. But the ball jumped into a sand trap on the left of the green, before she failed to make a 4-foot par putt and closed with a bogey, which settled Huang in a tie for second place with Hanna Chen on 5-under par 211. She carded a low-round 68.
Chen used a well-played, uphill 6-footer on the final green to earn a share of the runner-up place. She wrapped up the round with an even-par 72.
Shih Cheng-Hsuan (石澄璇) shot a 2-over final-round 74 to fall back into a T4 finish. P.K. Kongkraphan of Thailand, who has held three TLPGA Tour titles this season already, carded a third straight 71 and finished the tournament in solo seventh on 3-under.
Teenager Lin Jie-En (林潔恩) finished the event in a tie for eighth with last week’s BNP PARIBAS & TLPGA Heritage Tour winner Juliana Hung (洪玉霖) and three other players. This performance earned her the low-amateur honor.
KENDA captures about 85% of the world’s market need for golf cart wheels. The Changhua-based company started to provide sponsorship supports to professional golfers in 2003. In KENDA’s 50th anniversary in 2013, the first KENDA Tires TLPGA Open was staged. |
