18-year-old Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏) completed a wire-to-wire victory at the NT$5 million Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open. She finished the final-round at the windy Tong Hwa Golf and Country Club with a 5-under 67, putting her 54-hole total at a career best, 17-under 199.
Ready to kickstart her next campaign on the LPGA Tour next March, Hou Yu-Sang (侯桑), who started the round two shots off the pace, made two “unnecessary mistakes” at the early stage of the round, dooming her winning hopes and settled as the runner-up at 12-under 204.
Taiwan Mobile player and 2018 champion Lee Min (李旻), who made a final surge on Friday with a 69, wrapped up in a tie for third with 2020 champion Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸). Chien shared the record of the lowest winning score of 10-under 206 with 2017 champion, Thailand’s Ploychompoo Wilairungrueng, which was now rewritten by Wu.
This win marks Wu’s eighth TLPGA Tour victory already. The future looks very bright for the 2021 TLPGA Tour official money winner, which was just her first season as a pro. “There are a lot of great players around this week. Some of them have established great careers in Japan or in the U.S., which I hope I would, too,” said Wu. “I’m just luckier to be feeling well about myself and my game in this particular week. I still have a lot to learn from them and hopefully I’ll make this kind of results more often.”
“Chia-Yen played amazing today. A 67 in windy conditions like these,” said Hou Yu-Sang, who shares a strong bond of friendship with Wu since their amateur days. “Those bogeys on the fourth and fifth were about cutting my last thread of hope.” In fact, Hou was the first between the playing partners to score a birdie today on the 3rd hole, but failed to put further pressure on the leader the rest of the day and finished the round with a 70.
Former champions Lee Min and Chien Pei-Yun, despite both playing in the U.S. for a long time, went as playing partners for the first time ever today. Filled with chatters and laughs, their rounds ended with identical 9-under 207s.
“We faced quite a change of conditions and weather. It was not easy on the first day, but I felt I’m quickly getting better with each round,” said Lee, who was just back from the U.S.. Chien felt she could’ve done a lot more on the greens, “the speed feels really different, definitely not an easy week for me. I wish I’d have more time to adjust myself.”
“Yeah, usually it’s the off-season right now. I tend to be focusing on increasing my fitness level this time every year, so I felt like this is a good week for me, nonetheless,” said Hsu, who carded a bogey-free 70 and finished in a tie for fifth with Korea LPGA member Chen Yu-Ju (陳宇茹) at 7-under 209. The 2021 Pure Silk Championship winner will enter the Hitachi Ladies Classic in the first week of January before returning onto the LPGA Tour.
A crowd of six players closed the week in equal eighth at 211, including Phoebe Yao (姚宣榆), Juliana Hung (洪玉霖), Dussavi Soopimjit, Lai Yi-Ting (賴怡婷), Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉), and Tai Chia-Wen (戴嘉汶).
2021 low-amateur Huang Ting-Hsaun (黃亭瑄) carded red numbers in all three rounds and retained the low amateur honor. She eventually falls in T14 on the leaderboard. |
