Unfortunately, for the second day in a row, play was cancelled due to fog today at the Sunrise Golf Club. Rookie pro Chang Ya-Chun (張雅淳), with a two-round total of 1-over 145, takes the Wistron Ladies Open victory according to the rules. The win is worth $100,000.
The event, with the richest purse on the 2022 TLPGA Tour, is the only four-round event on the tour; however, only two rounds were completed as heavy fog invaded the area on Friday and Saturday.
In fact, the first flight today was sent off as scheduled at 7:00 today before the horn sounded by the tee time for the final group. The weather never allowed play again and the tournament decided to call it a week at 11:00.
“It’s apparently not an end everyone expected. I’m glad that I saw every hole and every chance in front of me a very important one, which kept me in the front and luckily, I’m here with the trophy,” Chang said.
The 22-year-old announced her pro status in July, when she graduated from United States’ University of Arizona, and actually needed a sponsor exemption to enter this week.
“I want to share this joy with everyone who has supported me throughout the path, which has not been an easy one. Thanks to Wistron, all the sponsors and staffs, and TLPGA’s (chairwoman) Ms. Liu, who gave me lots of opportunities to play on the tour when I was an amateur, also to Mom and Dad who stayed with me the whole week in such uncomfortable weather like this. And special thanks to my psychologist, Professor Ji, who has carried me through the down time when I was a little stressed with my studies in my senior years,” said Chang, who has been based at the Taiwan Golf Club since about 6-years-old. “I am just really happy this win has come so soon, and I believe this is going to be the first of many more to come!”
Set at 6,318 yards long for the week, the Sunrise golf course has hosted some major global events such as the LPGA Taiwan Championship, and it was also chosen as the venue of the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade.
Wistron, one of the global leaders in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) field, has been an important partner with the TLPGA since 2006 and hosting the annual Wistron Ladies Open since 2020.
Last year, the total prize money of the Wistron tournament had increased from NT$6 million in its inception year to NT$10 million ($330,000). This year, the 2022 Wistron Ladies Open became the richest tournament on the TLPGA Tour with a total prize of $500,000. Wistron president Lin H-M promised to bring back the event next year with an $800,000 purse.
