The final month of the 2022 TLPGA Tour season guarantees plenty of excitement with the boarder restrictions lifted. Three of the tour’s biggest events on the 2022 calendar are set to get going in the coming weeks, and the Wistron Ladies Opennow a four-day event, will embark this Wednesday.
102 players from six countries will be competing at the Sunrise Golf Club in the 72-hole tournament for a season-high $100,000 purse. Wistron, one of the global leaders in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) field, has been an important partner with the TLPGA since 2006 and hosting the annual Wistron Ladies Open since 2020.
In fact, this is the biggest prize money a non-co-sanctioned tournament has offered in Tour history. “It was respectable to see Wistron understand the difficult place our golfers were in, and sent their supports by making the Wistron Ladies Open happen during the most challenging times of the Tour with the pandemic outbreak as well as a border ban,” said TLPGA chairwoman Liu Yi-Chen. “In our endeavor to grow the tour and better serve our members and players, we very much appreciate (Wistron’s) President Lin’s generous support and involvement in the development of the TLPGA Tour, which is highlighted by the increases of prize purse for the Wistron events.”
Last year, the total prize money of the Wistron tournament had increased from NT$6 million in its inception year to NT$10 million ($330,000). This year, the 2022 Wistron Ladies Open became the richest tournament with a total prize of $500,000. Wistron president Lin H-M made a promise on the player party tonight to bring back the event next year with a $800,000 purse.
2020 champion Shih Cheng-Hsuan (石澄璇), who won the first Wistron Ladies Open at the Tong Hwa Golf & Country Club, will hope to get a winning taste here at the new venue. Teen sensation Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏) holds the 2021 title.
High profile names such as Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩), who sits no.78 on the 2022 LPGA Tour money list, fellow LPGA Tour players Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸), Lee Min (李旻), and Japan LPGA Tour winner Phoebe Yao (姚宣榆), and Tsai Pei-Ying (蔡佩穎) are also in this week’s field.
Lee Hsin (李欣), no.1 on the 2022 TLPGA Tour Money List, is looking to join 4th-ranked Juliana Hung (洪玉霖) as a three-time titlist in the 2022 season alone, while Hung seeks to write new history with a fourth victory.
Set at 6,318 yards long for the week, the Sunrise layout has hosted some major international events such as the LPGA Taiwan Championship, and it was also chosen as the venue of the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade.
The players tested the windy Sunrise course for one last time in today’s Pro-Am. Taiwanese pro Chen Chih-Min (陳之敏) led her foursome to the victory with the score of 9-under 63, winning themselves each a Majesty golf bag.
