Leaders of yesterday scrambled through the final day of the 2013 Chung Cheng Heritage Tour, while 20-year-old Liu Yi-Chen (Babe) (劉依貞) managed to minimize the damage and closed with a 2-over 74 at 3-over 147, claiming her first TLPGA title after she turned pro last September by one shot.
Liu, along with her fellow final group players, finished their round right before a thunderstorm arrived at the Chang Gung Golf Club. Though failed to drain a birdie putt on the 18th green, she closed it out with a par within 3 feet to the hole, and won herself her maiden title plus NT$71,000 first-place prize.
Liu said she thought she had the match under her bag even if she missed that final par putt. “I had zero pressure on that one if you ask me,” revealed the unaware Liu.
“This course is not an easy one, so I thought if I could put up somewhere near an even score I can probably win,” Liu analyzed.
Liu hoped she can take her confidence level back to where it was when she was an amateur with this victory. “I know I’m still not yet 100% compared to last year,“ Liu said. “But the win might help.”
Liu was ready for the LPGA Qualification and the U.S. Ladies Open qualifying last summer, but came back empty-handed with unexpected administrative mistakes, “I was near breakdown if my mom hadn’t been there with me,“ said Liu, who was once close to give up on a professional career.
First-round leader Chang Ching-Yun (張京運) scored an okay 37 on the front nine to maintain her position, but crumbled under pressure on the back nine with 4 bogeys and 1 double-bogey to finish tied with Chen I-Wen (陳依妏) for fifth at 150.
Chen Szu-Han (陳思涵) took over the lead after 14 holes but she bogeyed two of her last four holes, including a 7-foot miss on 18, and gave away the chance for a play-off by one stroke. She tied in the end with Shih Huei-Ju (石惠如) and Huang Yu-Chen (黃玉珍) for second, who hit the lowest of the day 71 and 72 respectively.
