Chang Hsuan-Ping (張瑄屏) created a number of records in the second round of the KENDA Tire TLPGA Open today. She scored eight birdies through 17 and closed the round with an eagle on the par-4 18th to turn in a tournament record 10-under 62. It is also the lowest score at the Taifong Golf Club in TLPGA Tour history.
A tour low-round record of 62 by Babe Liu (劉嬿) from the 2018 Tainan Ladies Open remains intact, but now with Chang joining to share this feat. With this level of performance, Chang will carry a two-shot lead into the final round of this week’s KENDA Tire TLPGA Open.
“It’s one of those rare days that I feel everything goes my way!” Chang said. “You don’t really make a 10-under with pure skills, you need some good luck.” Chang took out her 50-degree wedge for her second shot from 90 yards on the 18th, created a nice arch, and the ball jumped right into the hole after one bounce. “I knew that would be good when I hit it, but I didn’t expect it to go in.” A fitting ending to a flawless day. The 62 also makes Chang’s personal best in her professional career.
Previous low-round record in KENDA Tire Open’s eight-year history was held by Parinda Phokan in the first round of the 2019 event, where the Thai carded 66. And it took nine years for the course record of 67, made by Teresa Lu (盧曉晴) back in 2012, to be broken.
“Somehow, I felt a little distracted in my first round. Today I just told myself to keep the concentration.” Chang opened the tournament with a 3-over 75 on Wednesday, which was improved by 12 shots overnight. “I set a target to make five birdies today, and I needed just ten holes to do it. So, on the back nine, I set a new target to make three more, and I did not just make it but also surprised myself by topping it off with an eagle. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.” She needed just 22 putts.
Chang has three TLPGA Tour victories under her belt since she earned her membership in 2010 but all of them were from the 36-hole “Heritage Tour” series events, most recently in 2016. It would be her first big title should she take the win on Friday.
Juliana Hung (洪玉霖), representing New Zealand, completed Round 2 sitting in equal second on 5-under with first-round leader Liao Hsin-Chun (廖信淳). She made five birdies and three bogeys to wrap up Thursday with a 2-under 70. “I’m pretty comfortable with my putter this week. I have a nice feeling on the greens as if I’m going to make every putt. But my short game wasn’t very good. It kind of went to the left the whole day. I was a little struggling, nervous at the same time to play in the leading group. I tried to stay positive out there and I’m glad that my putter really held up,” Hung said.
Liao concluded the day steadily with two birdies and just one bogey. “I wasn’t feeling much pressure, just trying to enjoy the atmosphere,” said the 16-year-old amateur. “I missed some short putts, which could have put me closer to the lead.”
Hanna Chen (陳子涵) was off to a perfect start picking up five birdies through 10 holes, but failed to maintain the level after the turn. She recorded one more birdie inward but also one bogey and one double-bogey to finish the round with her second consecutive 70, sitting in a tie for fourth with Chen Hsuan (陳萱).
“I had a short, downhill par putt on the 16th. The first two attempts both just slipped from the edge of the cup. That was a big hit for me. I’m just happy I was able to collect myself quickly enough and made the tap-in birdie on the final hole,” said Chen, now three shots off the lead. “Three-shots is not a big lead at this Taifong course. Anything can happen in a blink.”
Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏) sits in solo sixth on 3-under par after a second-round 66.
55 players at 10-over 154 or better moved past the cut line for Friday’s final round. The schedule begins at 7:00 a.m.. Liao and Chang will be playing in the last pair teeing off at 8:44 a.m..
