17-year-old Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏) celebrated a wire-to-wire victory at the first YICHEN Future Open at the Sunrise Golf & Country Club on Thursday. The win made her title count this year, her rookie year as a pro, to an impressive three.

The notorious wind at the Sunrise was tamed down a bit in the final round. 36-hole leader Wu, who held a three-shot lead, snatched three birdies on the front nine and pretty much shut the door for any chasers. The Nan Pao Heritage Tour and WPG Ladies Open winner earlier this year went on to score two more birdies after the turn, and seal the victory with a Thursday 4-under 68 and final total of 13-under 203.

A four-week TLPGA Tour stretch has now come to an end.

“It’s really a test for me mentally and physically to play in four straight weeks, but I enjoyed the challenge a lot. You can feel that you keep on improving every single week. It is a unique experience that is really humbling and satisfying,” Wu said, who set new career low round score of 65 on Tuesday.

“I’m going to have a good rest now,” Wu said with a smile. “And then I′ll try to look back at the four weeks and see how I’m going to make some practice and adjustments on the things I haven’t been doing too well.”

Amateur player Chang Ya-Chun (張雅淳) wrapped it up with her second 68 in a row, finishing in a tie for second at 8-under 208 with Chen Hsuan (陳萱), who registered a final-round 70. “I have my distant online courses to take, which are in a totally different time zone,” said the University of Arizona student. “Which took away a lot of energy from me, so I’m quite surprised to be able to play this well here.”

Jessica Peng (彭婕) closed the week with a strong 6-under 66, finishing on a total of 7-under par and solo fourth. “My tee shots have been messy. I couldn’t really set myself in aggressive positions. But they got much better today,” said Peng. “I could get into better placements on the greens. Seven birdies is a rare achievement. I′m very happy with myself today.”

LPGA Tour campaigner Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) carded a low-round, bogey free 8-under 64 to jump into solo fifth place at 211. “It’s been a tough two weeks. I wasn′t playing badly but I just could really get anything going,” said Cheng. “Everything clicked today. I was super clutch on the greens, made a bunch of long putts. Some of them were actually very difficult with a lot of turns. I started to feel great in the later stage yesterday. It′s awesome that I could carry that kind of feeling into today and finally score low.”

The YICHEN Future Open, supported by “Yi-Chen Fan Club”, is the very first “Future series” event on the TLPGA Tour. The TLPGA Future series is a new level of tournaments that offers NT$1.5 million in prize money and is just below the top-tier TLPGA Tour events. Unlike the TLPGA Heritage Tour, although they share some similarities as they provide easier access for local amateurs, the Futures are recognized as part of both Women′s World Golf ranking and the Women′s World Amateur Golf Ranking systems.
