Hsieh Yu-Ling (謝瑀玲) lifted back to back victories this weekend at the Orient Golf & Country Club, capturing the CTBC Ladies Open after a three-player play-off. The victory is worth NT$600,000.
The recent SUNCITY Golf Camp Heritage Tour winner carded a 4-under 68 in the deciding round, her second straight bogey-free 68s, on Saturday to reach a final total of 6-under, leveling 36-hole leader Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏), who registered a 71. Amateur talent An Ho-Yu (安禾佑) birdied the final hole to join the pair as they returned to the 18th for a sudden-death play-off.
Hsieh missed a 2-footer on the first play-off hole, which could have beaten Wu and An’s pars.
Wu became the first to bow out after “only” making par again on the second attempt, while Hsieh and An found birdies. However, a sudden thunder rain hit the Orient club and according to the rulebook, the winner should be decided based on the final-round score, which, with the consent of both contenders, confirmed Hsieh as the champion. An won the low-amateur honor, deservedly.
“I thought I was still behind by one shot before the final hole, so I was like ‘I have to make birdie to stand a chance,’” Hsieh said, although realizing later she could have made a winning birdie, but still, it proved crucial as Wu and An later repeated the performance to match Hsieh at 6-under and force the play-off. “I had another chance to close it out on the first extended hole. I was too nervous and overhit it. Finally, I made it on the second attempt. I thought my mental strength had gone onto a new level after I won last year’s Party Golfers’ Open.”
Hsieh joined Wu to become the second player in the 2020 TLPGA Tour season to hold multiple victories. Wu, winner of the Nan Pao TLPGA Heritage Tour and the WPG Ladies Open, said she let too many opportunities slip on the front nine. “I was able to get into better placement today than I did in the previous rounds, but the putter kind of let me down,” the 17-year-old said, who made just one birdie out of the four par 5s.
An Ho-Yu had five birdies, offset by two bogeys to bounce back from the second-round 73 and break 70 again. “I was feeling the ball well. It was full of nerves on the 18th today after a whole day of effort. I’m really happy that I held up nicely,” An said. “It’s a little disappointing we had to end the game that way because of the rain, but I’m really proud of myself even if I didn’t win.”
LPGA Tour campaigner Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) posted the low-round 67. She racked up six birdies through 16 to catch up with the leading pack; however, she suffered a bogey on the 17th and wrapped it up on 5-under, just one shot off, which put Hsu in a tie for fourth with Babe Liu (劉嬿) and Lee Min (李旻).
“I wasn’t really hitting very comfortably the last three days, so I was a little surprised to see myself so close to the win,” Hsu said. “I tried to still play some aggressive golf even though I didn’t feel that well, and it turned out I had some kind of success. So, I still take a lot of positives from this week.”
