2018 Taiwan LPGA Tour | Party Golfers Ladies Open First-Round Recap
Date:2018-10-03

14-year-old sensation Wu Chia-Yen (吳佳晏) fired an impressive 5-under 67 in Wednesday gusts to set the early pace at the $100,000 Party Golfers Ladies Open.

Thailand’s Wanchana Poruangrong sit in solo second after clinching one eagle, five birdies and making three bogeys. She was just one shot off the lead and one shot ahead of compatriot Renuka Suksukont and TLPGA money leader Chen Yu-Ju (陳宇茹).

Yu Pei-Lin (余珮琳), Ladies Philippine Golf Tour (LPGT) order of merit leader Princess Mary Superal, and Thai Saranporn Langkulgasettrin wrapped up Day 1 with matching 70s to sit in equal fifth.

Starting from the 10th tee, Wu gained her first birdie in her second hole, and went on to knock in four consecutive birdies during Hole No.13 to 16. “I was feeling great. Sometimes you just feel like you can do anything, and it was like that,” said Wu. “I bent down, reading those greens, and I didn’t even talk to my caddie and I knew I was going to make birdies. It was the best feeling.”

The momentum was halted after a bogey on the 18th as the wind got up but Wu used a final stretch of birdie-bogey-birdie to bring her score back to 5-under. “I was hitting great off the tee, and the iron game was at a pretty good level as well. I hope I’ll start out tomorrow as confidently as I was today,” said Wu, who is the youngest player ever, at age 13, to reach the semifinals at the U.S. Amateur Championship in California last August.

Reigning TLPGA & Royal Open champion Chen Yu-Ju has been one of the most consistent golfers this summer, and she continued to perform well this week at the National Garden Golf and Country Club. She made a downhill, three-putt bogey on the 18th green, which was her only blemish on the scorecard. Chen scored four birdies from the plenty of opportunities she created for herself with solid and steady wood and iron play.

Through sixteen holes, 17-year-old Hou Yu-Chiang (侯羽薔) were still just behind the leader but she cracked two bogeys in the last two to drop back at even-par and T10.

“I was suddenly lost of my precision with the putter and had two bad three-putts at the end, but other than that, I thought I was holding up nicely in the strong winds,” said Hou, who constantly reminded herself to be patient when taking check of the clubs and yardages.

Last week’s KENDA Tire TLPGA Open champion Lu Hsin-Yu (盧昕妤) didn’t play to her ideal standard, carding a 4-over 76 to currently be in equal 48th place. Former winner at the Party Golfers’ event, Chen I-Wen (陳依妏) was in equal-75th after a tough first-round of 6-over 78.

The first-round allowed preferred lies due to puddles and muddy conditions. Second-round action will begin at 7:00 a.m. in the morning from both the first and tenth tee. A cut will be made to the low 50 and ties at the end of Thursday.

This week on the TLPGA Tour sees the return of Party Golfers Ladies Open to the schedule, featuring a prize purse of $100,000; $18,000 goes to the eventual winner.

The full entry list consists of 105 players from Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, the United States, and hosting nation Taiwan. The top Taiwanese finisher on Friday will win herself a wildcard into the Swinging Skirts LPGA Taiwan Championship later this month.

Title sponsor, the Party Golfers, is an amateur golf team comprised of local entrepreneurs, who share a strong passion for the golf sport as they lent their support selflessly and pushed the happening of the first Party Golfers Open in 2014.
