Thailand′s Ploychompoo Wilairungrueng extended her lead into the final round of the ICTSI Champion Tour - Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club. She has yet to make any bogey throughout 36 holes and is now at 10-under 134 after a Thursday 69.
Wilairungrueng is now four shots clear of the younger of Taiwan′s Hou sisters, 17-year-old Yu-Chiang (侯羽薔) (71), and five shots ahead of the 19-year-old Yu-Sang (侯羽桑) (70).
Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan, home girl Princess Mary Superal were also in a tie for second with Hou Yu-Chiang at 138 after carding matching 68s.
Saranporn Langkulgasettrin of Thailand fired a 68, too, and moved up the leaderboard to the sixth place at 140.
Because of the damped fairways, the officials allowed the players to have preferred lies. Wilairungrueng continued with her hot hand, making 13 fairways out of 14, as well as hitting 13 greens. Although she needed 30 putts, which was 4 more than yesterday, the 2017 Taiwan Mobile Ladies Open champion now still holds a comfortable four-stroke edge with only eighteen holes to go.
Carrying the local hopes, Filipino Princess Mary Superal′s putter was in the zone as she attempted just 23 strokes on the green. She completed the second round with seven birdies and three bogeys, sitting four shots back.
Hou Yu-Chiang admitted some frustration hitting amid swirling winds, causing a string of second shots too long past the greens. Hou’s attempted saves from uphill positions weren’t all that successful, leading to failed first putts and her three bogeys today. Fortunately, she was able to notch five birdies that kept her second to the leader. Hou was overall solid from the tee and on the fairways, hitting 13 greens in regulation, 29 putts.
Hou just reigned at the TLPGA Ladies Open – Nan Pao two months ago, which made the 17-year-old the first Taiwanese to win a pro tournament as an amateur after Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) at the Xiamen Challenge 2014 on the China LPGA Tour. She said she would rather be looking at each shot than the trophy; trying to play more relaxed is her top goal on Friday.
Turning nineteen just before the start of the tournament, Hou′s elder sister Yu-Sang had a cleaner scorecard on Thursday with three birdies and one bogey. The birthday girl said she was trapped by the unpredictable winds many times which affected her accuracy in approaches, “The wind was strong on one second, and almost zero o the next. I couldn′t put it as close as the pin as I did yesterday, so it wasn′t too easy on the green.” She needed 30 putts.
Five shots off, Hou Yu-Sang hoped her short game would improve in the final round. “I′m hoping to have a steady round, cut down the mistakes, and see if I will be able to snatch some chances.”
Both Hou sisters will be representing Chinese Taipei for the upcoming Jakarta Asian Games kickstarting on August 12.
Supamas Sangchan, tied for second with four shots to catch up to, had one eagle, five birdies, and three bogeys. Sharp putter has been a strong contribution for her success this week so far. She needed 27 putts in round two.
Starting from a share of the fifth place, Taiwanese Lee Chia-Pei (李佳霈) (74) and Lee Hsin (李欣) (76) registered over-par rounds on Thursday, slipping down into T16 and T27. Chen Min-Jou′s (陳敏柔) steady 72-71 put her into a tie for twelfth. The third best amateur in the field after the Hous is Chou I-Yi-Tsen (周怡岑) who sits in a tie for sixteenth after a pair of even-par 72s.
The cut was made at 5-over with 52 professionals and 6 amateur players making the final round which will be underway at 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
This year′s hole-in-one prize on Hole No.12 will be a brand new Mitsubishi Xpander MPV offered by Mitsubishi Motors.
