2016 Taiwan LPGA Tour Hong Kong Ladies Open Second-Round Recap
Date:2016-06-11

Pan Yen-Ling (潘彥伶) of Taiwan couldn’t quite replicate her dominant Friday form, carding a 4-over 76 in the second round of the Hong Kong Ladies Open and her five shot lead was melted to just one over Taiwanese pro rookie Wu Yi-Ching (伍以晴). Pan is now at 5-under par 139 heading into Sunday’s final round. Wu, who shot 71, will be playing in the leading group for the first time in a final round.

Thai teen Kanphanitnan Muangkhumsakul recorded a 1-over 73, India’s Vani Kapoor and Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan both turned in a 71, and the trio sits in a tie for third trailing by two strokes.

Chinese amateur Liu Yan (劉艷), who registered a second-round 74, dropped into equal sixth along with Korean So-Young Jang but they’re still in striking distance with just three shots off.

Pan started the day two with a five shot edge at 9-under, which quickly faded and she was headed after eleven holes when Wu went to 6-under.

Pan had a three-putt bogey to open the round. A string of errors off the tee resulted in another two bogeys on the par-5 sixth and ninth. Wu cemented her lead after making the fifth birdie of the day on Hole 14 while Pan dumped another tee shot wide on par-4 13th to suffer a bogey. However, Wu complied two unlucky holes in her closing effort, where she found the sand trap on 16th and got a penalty for “lost ball” after a loose drive into the trees on 17th. The bogey and double-bogey combination gave back the control to Pan when Wu returned to the clubhouse, finally stepping back with a one-shot deficit.

Pan wasn’t given many chances for birdie, with the closet birdie putt being from 15 feet on the green, which was unsuccessful. “I was trying to maintain the lead but in the end I felt I was too conservative and lost my rhythm,” said Pan. “It’s been raining quite a bit so it was pretty hard to get back in it. I was losing the feel both in my mind and on my hands.”

“I will go back and think again about a few things I could have done better today. I’m hoping I will keep things back in order tomorrow,” Pan said.

“I was playing quite aggressive actually. Putting was great,” said Wu. She only needed 24 putts, rewriting her own record in any official event. Wu made two longer putts from 21 feet on the third and fifth holes. Chip-and-putt has been tidy for Wu as well. She secured three other birdies with the short chip and putter combo. She only missed four fairways.

“I’ll need to cut down a few misses in the final. I’ve been hitting good with my putter and I’ll just need to keep it up and don’t worry too much.” Turning pro at the end of 2015, Wu has been playing golf now for ten years. The college student is now trained at the Chang Gung Golf Course. She was based at the Sunrise Golf Club when she was younger.

Because of consistent showers at Fanling starting from midnight last night until about afternoon today, players struggled to make birdie runs and only eight players finished under-par in wet conditions compared to twenty-three yesterday. The tournament had announced the adoption of the “preferred lies” rule for all three rounds.

The 36-hole cut was made at 8-over 152 with 66 golfers making it into the final Sunday.

The Hong Kong Ladies Open is a co-sanctioned event by the TLPGA Tour and LAGT (Ladies Asian Golf Tour) for the second straight year. The 2016 event will offer a prize fund of US$150,000, which is 25% higher than previously. The top finisher on Sunday will win US$22,500 and the runner-up will earn US$15,000.
