Overnight leader Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden extended her lead into the final round of the Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial. She carded a 3-under 69 and arrived at 12-under total, leading runner-up Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong of Thailand, who posted a 67, by two strokes.
German Sophia Popov shot a 69 as well and sit three shots off the pace at 207. American Ally McDonald and Japanese teenager Kana Nagai turned in matching 71s to have a share for fourth at 209.
Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) continued to lead the Taiwanese contingent, although dropping from just two strokes to now seven back of the lead, after a 2-over 74 on Saturday. She stands in solo seventh.
Among the other four TLPGA players who had made Friday’s cut, Ladies European Tour member Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) sit highest at equal 24th at 216 after a 2-under 70 on Saturday.
15-year-old amateur Chang Ya-Chun (張雅淳), who finished in a share of second in Lake Wales the past week at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic, carded a 75 and moved into a tie for 31st with a three-round total of 218. Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧) also shot 75 and sit another shot back at 219 and equal 38th. Symetra Tour titlist Lin Tzu-Chi (林子麒) dropped into a tie for 52nd at 223 after a 5-over 77.
Sagstrom has broken 70 in all three rounds at this year’s Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial. She averaged an impressive 273 yards in driving distance and made 11 greens in regulation on Saturday as she capitalized five birdies chances to secure her place at the top of the leaderboard with a 3-under 69. Sagstrom needed only 26 putts.
Sagstrom has a good start to the season with two top 10 finishes and is ranked second on the Symetra Tour’s Volvik Race for the Card money list. It will be her first Symetra Tour title if she can win on Sunday.
Chien was tripped up by the windy conditions at the Cypress Lake Country Club and failed to deliver her record-breaking level from Friday. She set her best single-round scoring mark with a second-round 66.
“I think I was putting well, but the irons were a mess,” said Chien, who took only 25 putts but there were a lot of saves around the greens or from the greenside bunkers as she made just 7 of 18 greens in regulation.
“I got up from the sand three times to just about 3 feet but still gave away two easy putts,” said Chien. “The wind made it a difficult task all day. It was actually not that terrible but I was worrying a little too much so I didn’t play as decisive as I would like to.”
“I’m glad the putter held up nicely so it wouldn’t be too bad.” Chien made a great downhill 15-foooter to leave with par on Hole 3, where her tee shot had fallen into a water hazard. “There is no pressure tomorrow. I’ll have to put up my best and stay positive and aggressive. I’ll be fighting for another low-round hopefully!”
The Symetra Tour players were hitting alongside the Legends Tour field of 30 former LPGA greats on Saturday. The Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial is concurrently the second tournament on the 2016 Legends Tour and the curtain falls on Sunday. Seven players led the pack in the Legends Tour event with an even-par 72.
Final-round play will start at 7:30 in the morning and the leaders’ group will be hitting the first tee at 12:49.
The TLPGA Tour and the Symetra Tour forged a historic partnership in the off season to put two co-sanctioned tune-up events on the schedule-- the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic last week and the Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial-- to help TLPGA players get acclimated to playing in the U.S. ahead of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in San Francisco.
The Chico’s Patty Berg Memorial, in memory of former LPGA superstar and founding member Patty Berg, has doubled the purse since its inaugural event in 2014 when the prize money was US$100,000 and the winner earned US$15,000. In 2015, the purse increased to US$150,000 and this year, the total prize purse reach US$200,000 and the winner will take US$30,000.
Berg was an active figure on the LPGA Tour during 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. She has won 15 majors, which remains an all-time record, and 60 career titles. Berg has been a member of the Hall of Fame since 1951.
There are a combined 327 LPGA Tour wins in the Legends Tour field and three players contributed each more than 40 victories - Nancy Lopez (48), JoAnne Carner (43) and Sandra Haynie (42). Seven of them have been inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame.
