18-year-old Thai rookie pro Budsabakorn Sukapan kept her mettle despite a final-hole crisis and won her second tour title at the 2015 CTBC Ladies Open on Saturday.
Sukapan carded a final round 5-under par 67 to come from one stroke back of compatriot Pavarisa Yoktuan for the win at the Orient Golf & Country Club. She won by one stroke at 16-under par for the NT$1 million winner prize. Taiwan’s LPGA Tour rookie Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) and China’s teenage star Shi Yuting (石昱婷) both posted low-round 66s to finish equal third at 14-under par 202.
This win makes Sukapan a two-time tour titlist already after she turned professional in March. She was the winner of Srixon XXIO Ladies Open in May. “I’m just very happy with my second victory,” said Sukapan, who also won a silver medal and led the Thai contingent to another gold medal in the team competition in the 2014 Asian Games.
Sitting one stroke back to Yoktuan at 11-under par entering the day, Sukapan leveled it right away after an eagle on the 1st while Yoktuan scored a birdie. The momentum swung to and fro between the Thai duo and the birdie count kept rising as both of them arrived at 16-under after the front nine.
Sukapan capitalized on a birdie chance on 12th to steal back the outright lead and seemed like she would cruise to the finish line as Yoktuan fell back with bogeys on 16th and 17th. However, on the final and 54th hole of the tournament, Sukapan dumped her approach behind a signage above the green which cost her a one-stroke penalty. She took a new lie for her fourth shot on the par-4, knowing that she had to finish in two shots to secure the victory.
And she did. Sukapan calmly chipped within just one foot and tapped in for bogey to seal the deal.
Yoktuan did all she could to put pressure on the young rival, birdieing the final hole from 45-foot but she knew it was on Sukanpan’s club. “She played an amazing round,” Yoktuan said. “It was nice enough I can finish alone at second, thanks to the final birdie. I didn’t expect it to go in from that position.”
Sukapan broke 70 in all three rounds and the final total of 16-under par has surpassed 2012 winner Numa Gulyanamitta’s tournament record at 11-under.
CTBC face Hsu, who is now ranked 59th on the 2015 LPGA Tour Official Money list, fired two eagles in the final round and put up a third-round 66 to finish at 14-under. “I’ve made like only 20 eagles throughout my career so far and I got two in one day today,” said Hsu. “A little disappointing that I gave it back right after the first eagle on 5th with a double-bogey on the next. But all in all, I’ve tried my best and I have no regret. It was a good tournament for me!”
Another CTBC sponsored player and LET regular Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) shot as many as eight birdies but also made four bogeys in her final-round of 4-under 68 to finish this week at solo fifth at 204.
Thailand’s Prima Thammaraks used her 8-iron to record the first ace in tournament history on the 141-yard 7th but, unluckily, on the “wrong” hole as she got none of the two hole-in-one prizes-- a LEXUS ES200 car on the 16th provided by Lexus Taiwan, and a Harry Winston Excenter luxury timepiece on the 13th, sponsored by WTE advertising. It was a seventh lifetime hole-in-one and third in an official competition for Thammaraks. She finally wrapped up with a 2-over 74 Saturday and finished in a tie for 44th at 218. |
