2015 Taiwan LPGA Tour CTBC Ladies Open Second-Round Recap
Date:2015-09-25

Pavarisa Yoktuan from Thailand again showcased a sharp combination of iron and putter to put up a bogey-free 5-under 67. The 21-year-old broke free from a first-round three-way tie to take the sole lead at a 12-under par 132 heading into the final round of the 2015 CTBC Ladies Open.

First-round co-leader and Yoktuan’s compatriot Budsabakorn Sukapan carded a 4-under 68 to sit one stroke back.

A pair of CTBC faces, Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩) and Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) both also shot 4-under 68s and are now four shots off at 136. Hsu will be playing for her first victory on home turf, while Cheng is aiming for her first victory as a pro.

China’s rising star Shi Yu-Ting (石昱婷) tied the low course record 64 and surged into a tie for third with Hsu and Cheng. South African Monique Smit also hit an 8-under 64 second round and found herself into the top 10 at T9. The 64 course record on the Orient Golf & Country Club was set at this tournament in 2012 by eventual champion Numa Gulyanamitta.

“It was the third time I hit a 64. I was so close to break my own record if I didn’t make that bogey at the end of the day,” said Shi, who registered nine birdies and dropped her only shot on the par-4 17th. “I will have four shots to catch up. I will try as much as I can and see if I get to sneak into the front.”

Topping the leaderboard now is Yoktuan, who is chasing her second tour victory. As the defending champion, the Thailand native had another strong finish to solo second at the Wuhan Challenge earlier this month. She posted five birdies against zero bogey to earn a one-shot edge over 18-year-old Sukapan into the final round. The two will be playing partners in the featured last group.

“I know Budsabakorn well, she is a great player. I will try not to think about her and just play to my own rhythm tomorrow,” said Yoktuan. “We are both driving well. So it would probably come down to the short game and who can come up with better approach shots to create more opportunities on the greens.”

LPGA rookie Hsu Wei-Ling had a bogey-free round at the Orient Golf & Country Club but she wasn’t satisfied given she had hit all 18 greens, which was a first in her career. “I don’t know what just happened,” Hsu exclaimed. “It’s great that I made all 18 greens in regulations, and I put them all in good position within like 12 feet, but they just wouldn’t roll in. I even missed a couple of putts shorter than 3 feet.”

“I was being too passive on the front nine, felt like I was holding back a little and only getting better after the turn,” said Hsu. “I won my first title on the 2013 Symetra Tour at the Credit Union Challenge where I came from trailing four shots. And now I’m four back, too!” Currently ranked 59 on the 2015 LPGA Tour Official Money list, the 21-year-old Taiwanese is high on confidence with a T8 finish at the recent Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic, where she rewrote her personal low-tournament score at 11-under.

Cheng, who fell to a runner-up finish last year after three play-off holes, used five birdies against one bogey to finish at four shots back as well. “It was a bit disappointing honestly. There were some putts I felt on the line but just missing,” said the 21st-ranked on LET’s 2015 Order of Merit. She took 30 putts in her second-round 68

Champion at the Party Golfers Ladies Open two weeks ago , former TLPGA Tour no.1 Lu Ya-Huei (呂雅惠) carded a 69 to tie overnight leader Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras and Chinese teen Zhou Jiayi (周佳怡) for equal sixth at five shots off the lead.

A cut was made to send the top 49 and ties, a total of 54 players into the final Saturday of the NT$5 million tournament, co-sanctioned by the TLPGA and China LPGA. The winner will get a NT$1 million top cash prize. Adding to the intrigue, there will be two hole-in-one prizes-- a LEXUS ES200 car on the 16th provided by Lexus Taiwan, and a Harry Winston Excenter luxury timepiece on the 13th, sponsored by WTE advertising.
