With a 6:45 morning tee time and an 18-hole shotgun start to minimize the effects of Typhoon Soudelor, players were only brought in front of brief gusts and sudden rains and the play was finished well before noon. Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan wrapped up with another low-round of 3-under 69 and took her maiden TLPGA Tour title at the TLPGA Future Open presented by High Tech Charity by four shots.

Chan put up a dominating finish at the Tong Hwa Golf & Country Club on Friday with eagle and birdies to post a three-round total of 207, winning her also the low amateur honor. Taiwan’s Hsieh Yu-Ling (謝瑀玲)’s winning hope faded with growing pain in her right shoulder especially toward the end. “I was feeling some pain and had trouble in my reflexes. I was kind of feeling lost with the yardage,” said Hsieh, who handed in a final-round 74 to finish at 211 and solo second. “So then, I tried my best to keep the mistakes down. It’s a little disappointing with the shoulder problem, but I’m glad I was able to keep my composure out there and at least secured the low score for the pro prize.” She took home a NT$600,000 check in a total purse of NT$3 million.

Hsieh started the day one shot ahead of Chan and made the turn keeping that edge. On the par-5 488-yard 12th, Chan bombed her second shot to just off of the green, and then chipped in for eagle which had her take over the lead. She then picked up another stroke with a 20-foot birdie on the 15th. Hsieh’s chance was dashed after she made a bogey on the 16th and finally lost by four.

Chan’s overall 9-under 207 marks the first time she ever breaks par in a TLPGA Tour tournament. This is also the first time since Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) at the 2014 Jing-Du Construction Charity Ladies Open that an amateur player comes away victorious. To make it more special, both wins came from this Tong Hwa Golf Course.

“I mean, the course conditions are amazing. The greens are beautiful,” said Chan. “I’ve recently undergone some change in my driving motion, which substantially increased the distance and gave me a lot of confidence on the par-5s. I took advantage of that this week, pretty much laid on on just my second on every par-5 hole so I got to score some easy birdies.”

The 21-year-old college player in the States had a summer break so she made a plan to Taiwan with her father for this tournament, and luckily it proved to be a smart decision and she’s improved from last summer when took just the low amateur prize at the KENDA Tires TLPGA Open, to a first pro Tour win. The third-year TLPGA Tour member would hope to become a professional golfer after she gets her college degree.

“It’s a great week. I want to thank the sponsors and the Taiwan LPGA for giving me this opportunity. I will continue to work hard,” said Chan, who currently owns a world amateur ranking of no.27. TLPGA chairwoman Liu Yi-Chen also expressed her gratitude on the prize ceremony for the continuous support for the TLPGA Tour from the High Tech Charity.

Taiwanese teenager Chang Ya-Chun (張雅淳), who won in Group Girls’ 12-16 and finished even lower than the pros at last week’s Gem Sheen TLPGA Heritage Tour, had her parents both with her as well as her Taiwan Golf Club coach Chen Liang-Shi and shot an even par 72 to finish solo third at 212. Chang is taken as one of the most promising and aspiring in the young crop of Taiwanese golfers.

Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) of Taiwan put up a 3-under 69 to finish at 213 and solo fourth, winning the runner-up pro cash prize of NT$300,000.

This year, the TLPGA Future Open presented by High Tech Charity, formerly known as the Technology Cup, is titled with a new name in connection with the TLPGA Future Challenge Series.
