Babe Liu (劉依貞) had to battle through Hsieh Yu-Ling (謝瑀玲) in the first play-off hole with a birdie to claim the 2015 Mercuries Life Insurance Heritage Tour. Liu (69) and Hsieh (68) both finished with a 6-under 138 to return to the 18th tee for a sudden-death play-off, where Liu sank a 6-foot birdie to outshine Hsieh for her first TLPGA Tour win since last May at the KENDA Tire TLPGA Open.
Long hitter Chen Meng-Chu (陳孟竺) shot a 71 to finish solo third at 140. First-round leader Huang Hsien-Wen (黃賢雯) dropped to solo fourth with a 73 final-round at 141. Lynn Chiu (邱齡緹) sit solo fifth at 1-under 143.
In her first official event with a new left-hand-low putting motion, Babe Liu put 28 putts in the first-round statistics, and today is was a 29, consistent enough for her to card three birdies on 12th, 14th, and 15th and to remain bogey-free. Despite leaving with 11 straight pars to start the day, Liu used the late surge to stand onto the lead with Hsieh Yu-Ling, who earlier wrapped up the tournament with back-to-back birdies.
Liu and Hsieh came back to the par-4 18th for the play-off, and both landed their tee shots safely on the fairway. However, a third shot that was just slightly short for a bounce onto the green cost Hsieh dearly, as she watched Liu fired it to the back of the pin and birdie from six feet to settle the champion honor.
Liu pocketed NT$71,000 and Hsieh won NT$45,000 for her runner-up showing.
“I’m very happy I get to keep the concentration and fight back my way,” Liu said, who was one shot off a three-way lead of Huang (73), Chen (71), and Hsieh (68) on the front nine. Her last TLPGA Tour victory dates back to last May at the KENDA Tire TLPGA Open.
Coming back from a knee injury for her first tournament in a year, Chang Jing-Yun (張京運) used a 7-iron to tee off on the 150-yard par-3 3rd and the ball found the hole. It was the first time she recorded an ace in a pro event, and she was awarded with a bonus NT$22,000 cash prize from the Tong Hwa Golf & Country Club and President of Mercuries Life Insurance, Mr. Liu Chong-Hsing. Chang carded an even-par 72 today and finished in a tie for 11th at 146.
The Mercuries Life Insurance Heritage Tour is the first stop of the 2015 TLPGA Heritage Series pro-junior tournaments, in which the TLPGA pros are grouped with amateurs and junior golfers, creating an easy interaction for the passing of “heritage” between the experienced and the young prospects, for which the series of events are named. The concept is also one of the main focuses for the TLPGA to nurture future sport leaders.
Mercuries Life Insurance has been a generous supporter on the Taiwan PGA (Men’s) Tour and hosted the Mercuries Taiwan Masters for the past 28 years. This week, it marks the first time the company takes the role of the title sponsor in a TLPGA Tour event. |
