2015 Taiwan LPGA Tour TLPGA & Royal Open Final-Round Recap
Date:2015-02-01

Thailand’s Nontaya Srisawang rolled in a final par putt to defeat Thai American Tiffany Tavee in a play-off and took her second straight victory at the 2015 TLPGA & Royal Open in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Srisawang, who has come back in the event for the fourth year in a row, was two shots clear of Tavee at 7-under-par with only the final 18th hole to play but sent her third shot out of a bunker to another water hazard, finishing with a double-bogey. Fortunately, she stayed patient enough returning to the par-5 18th again for the sudden-death play-off and edged Tavee, who made it to the green on her sixth shot, with a par to seal the deal.

Srisawang bent her knees down as the final putt sank. Her caddie came up to give the already teary Srisawang a big hug, and fellow players arrived right after to douse her with water in celebration. With the victory, Srisawang receives a champion prize check of NT$1.2 million.

"I want to thank my good friend and my caddie Neeranuch, who was also here last year," said Srisawang. “The conditions were better than last year, but still the settings were very challenging. I got a little nervous closing it out but I’m happy finally I won it on the second chance.” The backdrop of this week’s event is Royal Kuan-Hsi Golf Club, which will be commemorating its 20 year anniversary this year.

It was pretty much anyone’s game on the front nine earlier in the day, with a packed group of headliners including Srisawang, Tavee, and Korea’s Jang So Young at 4-under-par, and first-round leader Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉) at 3-under.

Out of all, Tavee especially, was riding an impeccable momentum, scoring seven birdies and bogey-free after ten holes, and looked to break the course low-round of 64 set by former World No.1 and a TLPGA member, Yani Tseng (曾雅妮), but fell in a drought after then, finishing with eight straight pars. Instead, Srisawang’s late charge with three birdies had her stand out from the rest despite the final-hole collapse. Her 54-hole total was a 5-under 211, though, three shots shy of her winning score of 208 last year.

Babe Liu (劉依貞) used also a late burst of form to surge up the leaderboard into a tie with Cheng Ssu-Chia, who both parred the finishing hole to share third place at 4-under 212, one shot short of forcing a four-way play-off.

Chen Chih-Min (陳之敏) carded a 1-under 71 and finished atop the amateurs’ at 216, tying for seventh in overall standings.

The TLPGA & Royal Open is the longest running tournament since 2002 and the first internationally open event on the TLPGA Tour.
