Trailing by one shot heading into Friday’s final round, Shih Huei-Ju (石惠如) held off two of the most promising youngsters of her own country, Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇凌) and Cheng Ssu-Chia (程思嘉), to post 4-under 212 with a final-round even par 72 to win her second TLPGA Tour title in 2014 at the Ching Yeh Paint Ladies Open.
Chen Meng-Chu (陳孟竺) and Kuo Ai-Chen (郭艾榛) finished at solo fourth and fifth with scores of 2-under 214 and 1-over 217 respectively. First-round leader Lin Tzu-Chi (林子麒) finished her tournament with a 2-over 74 to get back in a tie for seventh with Lynn Chiu (邱齡緹) at 220.
In a final-day déjà vu of the 2013 Technology Cup, Shih again overcame a one-shot deficit and finally snatched the victory from Hsu. Shih pocketed NT$600,000 while Hsu took away a full NT$300,000 paycheck sitting in a tie with Cheng at 213 who is in amateur status.
Four players were engaged in a see-saw battle earlier in the day. Up until the fifth hole, Hsu still carried a two-shot lead over Shih, and another one-shot advantage over Cheng and Chen. However, back-to-back-to-back bogeys on Hole 6-8 saw Hsu’s lead slashed to zero in no time, as Shih sank an important birdie putt on the 7th to take the charge. Chen, the recent Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Autumn) winner, ended her chance after recording consecutive double-bogeys on the 7th and 8th.
“It was such a crucial birdie,” said Shih. “It kind of settled me down from then on, saved a lot of nice pars after that.”
“My golf was not as strong as I hoped today, but I think I did well to stay tough in those tight moments,” said Shih after her fourth career win. “It was windy. I managed to keep my shots low and tried to hit as many greens as possible, which I did pretty good and I think it potentially gave them some added pressure.” Shih hit 14 greens, made one birdie and just one bogey throughout in blustery conditions at the Tao Yuan Golf & Country Club.
Home course player Hsu once again watched her chance for a first victory on the TLPGA Tour slipped. “Again, to her (Shih),” Hsu said with a wry smile. “It was very close again this time. I was rushing a little bit and couldn’t really get my rhythm going on the front nine. But that’s golf. I will learn, and hopefully, one day it will be me.”
Top Taiwanese amateur Cheng made a low-round 1-under 71, interesting enough, thanks to a dog coming up on the 15th green that took her ball. “I hit my third shot of 15th, left a birdie chance, but then a dog came up and just took it way!” Cheng was allowed to recreate the lie and scored the only birdie on the back nine. She had a front-nine 36 and 35 on the back with three birdies and two bogeys.
Ching Yeh Paint joins this week as a new title sponsor as 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the Taiwanese brand. The inaugural Ching Yeh Paint Ladies Open is the last event on 2014 TLPGA Tour calendar. Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸), who finished this week at T16, is crowned the year-end No.1 on the money list. |
