Rolex Rankings No. 1 Inbee Park was able to hold off a strong final round charge from Rolex Rankings No. 2 Stacy Lewis to capture the 2014 Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship.
“I think playing with Stacy, I really wanted to play well, and obviously being able to win the tournament was a great accomplishment,” Park said. “It was a tough day and I got nervous on every hole today even on the 18th hole.”
Park posted a 1-under round of 71 for a 22-under total to capture her third LPGA victory of the season by two strokes over Lewis. Park also broke the tournament record for four-round total of 19-under set by Suzann Pettersen in 2012.
“I hung in there all day and just made Inbee work for it,” Lewis said. “That was the goal, and you give Inbee four shots, it’s a tough task to overcome, and you know, she hit the shots when she needed to coming in.”
As Lewis mentioned, Park was able to hit the clutch shots when she needed to en route to her victory including a key chip-in bogey save after having to take a drop on the par-4 9th and a birdie on the par-3 17th which extended her lead to two strokes with two holes to play.
“Stacy was really tough,” Park admitted. “In the middle of the round I was only one ahead of her, and I was lucky to be one ahead of her, so it was a really good day but it wasn’t an easy day for me.”
While the win was Park’s third of the season and 12 of her impressive career it was her first victory as a married woman. “I think this will be my wedding gift for myself,” Park joked.
Rolex Rankings No. 3 Lydia Ko rounded out the top-3 at 17-under thanks to a final round 66, the low round of the day.“I think I played really well here in Asia,” Ko said. “Obviously there were a lot of great memories made, and, yeah, I just enjoyed my time playing over here in Asia.”
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s 17-year-old amateur Ssu-Chia Cheng shook off her disappointing score of 75 yesterday to post a 2-under 70 in windy and raining conditions, finishing in a tie for 15th as the top finisher among 20 Taiwanese players in the filed this week. “I am happy I reached the goal I set for myself before the tournament,” said Cheng.
Former champion Yani Tseng also mounted a rally today by firing 6 birdies against 1 bogey and one triple-bogey to close with a 2-under 70 and sit at a tie for 20th with a total score of 282. “I knew there would be lots of birdie opportunities down the road so I did not let one bad shot got into my head,” said Tseng. |
