Gusts of wind whipped as players swung on the final Thursday at the T.H.E. CLUB in Hukou, Hsinchu, with the leaderboard flipping restlessly, in a final day rich of some excitingly high suspense, and finally Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) of Taiwan, who outlasted Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧) to confirm her victory not until the 17th, won a third career crown at the 2014 TLPGA & Tsai Hsing Heritage Tour.
She used a late birdie hunt to finish today with a 2-under 69, and 141 overall to edge Yeh by two shots, who started the day one shot ahead. First-18-hole leader Chen Meng Chu (陳孟竺) was beaten by the hard wind to card a final-round 77 to drop into a tie for seventh with Yu Pei-Lin (余珮琳).
Chien walked away with a winner payout of NT$71,000.
“I was trying to keep myself pumped from the beginning and I was feeling so good and ready to put up a fight today. I was just two shots back and I had a feeling I could make it,” said Chien, who had been picturing herself to be doused in water on the final green, a general celebration for golf champions, heading to the first tee.
Chien’s last victory was also a 36-hole Heritage Tour win at the 2013 Chung Cheng Heritage Tour (Autumn) in November. “Every win means to me and I’m going to keep it up to the LPGA qualifying test coming up a couple weeks ahead,” said Chien.
Always quite a threat but still winless up to today, Yeh remained neck-to-neck with Chien until her par putt on the 16th lipped out. Yeh went on to par the 17th where Chien left with the fourth birdie of the day after back-to-back ones through 14th to 15th, which literally shut yet another chance for a taste of her first victory.
Yeh receives a prize check of NT$45,000 for her runner-up finish at 143, one-stroke in front of 2014 TLPGA Heritage Tour winner Hsieh Yu-Ling (謝瑀玲) and 2014 KENDA Tires TLPGA Open winner Babe Liu (劉依貞).
Although failing to defend her title, Cheng Yi-Yu (鄭宜宥) racked up a bonus NT$20,000 “Birdie Queen” award sponsored by Mr. Chen Wen-Kuang (陳文光). She has made a leading eight birdies (and three today) throughout 36 holes, wrapping up at 145 in sole position of fifth.
The 2014 TLPGA & Tsai Hsing Heritage Tour is the third pro-junior event out of four on the 2014 calendar. Aligning a 13-year tradition, the professionals are placed in the same playing group with amateurs and junior golfers and encouraged to pass on their precious points of golfing advice and etiquette. |
